Gratefully Frustrated

There are two places in this world that I would never choose to spend any type of quality time at, the DMV and the Emergency Room. Unfortunately, yesterday was spent with very little quality time at the ER. I took Alyssa to the doctor for a fever and the next thing I know we were being admitted to the ER!

My sweet, four-month-old baby girl was very sick, and trembling with a high fever and no ‘seeable’ infection.

We arrived at the ER around 4:00 pm in the afternoon where we literally fell into a time and space void. She was finally discharged at 12:00 am. My precious baby girl needed a blood and urine tests to rule out any internal infections. It was excruciating to see her held down, screaming at the top of her lungs, while being poked in the hand by a needle. I was heart broken and helpless. Once that trauma was over, the time void really began to take effect. Three lengthy hours passed by before we heard any word from a doctor. Her temperature had actually fallen below 98.5 degrees and now was on the border of being dangerously low. Luckily, that made the doctors take notice and we finally heard news that our lovable little baby had a urinary tract infection. Oh great, now we know what caused her high fever, I can take her home now right? Wrong, our night didn’t stop there!

They now wanted to give her fluids and antibiotics through an IV. An additional hour and a half inched by. Both she and I were extremely exhausted and ready to escape the ER. Finally the discharge nurse came in to tell us we could go home. With no empathy for my frustration she said, “At least you’re not being admitted. There are a lot sicker kids here than her here tonight.” She was right. I was still perturbed. It is truly wearisome to feel helpless for your children.

Grateful. I am can’t even put into words how grateful I am to have healthy, thriving children. My mind kept going to a dark place, thinking of what families with chronically sick children must go through. My charming baby girl had something diagnosable, curable and so minimal in comparison to what some children suffer through. I not only have more empathy for these families, but I feel compelled to help in some way.

Needless to say, my patience level is tapped out for the week. I have definitely filled my quota!! I will be taking a warm bath, drinking a glass of wine and going to bed early tonight, but only after kissing my three precious children goodnight.

Oh my goodness!!! Poor Alyssa! Katelyn had a UTI when she was 11 weeks old and it landed us in the ER. It's not fun watching your precious baby get poked and proded. Hope she feels better soon! We'll be praying for her!
